As the NWT continues to welcome new visitors from across the globe, local  businesses are eager to learn how to best capitalize on these opportunities.

Hot on the heels of the NWT’s successful tourism mission to China, a course designed to help businesses build long-lasting customer loyalty with visitors from that market means dozens of industry participants are now better prepared.

The Service Excellence for Chinese Visitors course was delivered in the NWT for the first time in July. The course, developed and delivered by prominent non-profit tourism education firm Ontario Tourism Education Corporation, completed three half-day sessions in Yellowknife and Hay River.

Curriculum included training on issues of diversity, cultural differences, the Chinese tourism market, and customer service practices to best serve the world’s largest tourism marketplace.

The programming was free for participants thanks to funding from the GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

Participants left with a guidebook in hand to reference as they work to incorporate these approaches into their tourism offerings and business practices.

As the single-largest renewable resource-based industry, investments in a stronger tourism sector offer the best, most immediate opportunity to achieve economic diversity in the NWT.

Improving economic diversity is central to the GNWT’s mandate.
